May continued to be a month of mayhem and bloodbath in the market. I generally don’t like using such dramatic terms but there is very little else to sum it up. Not only are all indices in the red, this is also gradually eroding the one-year returns.

It is a time of really testing the mettle of investors. For many first timers who really got into the fray during the pandemic, investing came with the delusion that the only way for markets to go was up. There will be some who went in much more than they could take, never to return again. On the other hand, there will be some who will emerge out of it as more mature investors.

One difference in this month was that the markets reacted in more of a conventional manner. Meaning unlike last month when losses were more in the Large cap index while mid and small cap indices continued to blink in green, the tables were turned this time. Mid and small cap indices lost more than the large cap indices.

Check out how all the major indices moved last month. By the way, while all other indices are in TRI or Total Returns Index mode (meaning stock dividends add to the returns), Sensex is plain jane Sensex.

Just two points that need to be pointed out.

One, Axis mutual fund AUMs, atleast in the categories analysed here have not suffered much of a dent despite the reputational issues from the front running incident. In each of the six categories, they have managed to maintain their rank, include the highly competitive Large Cap funds.

Two, many funds seem to have taken tiny positions in the IPOs of the month which includes the giant Life Insurance Corporation of India, Delhivery, Ethos, Prudent Corporate Advisory and Aether Industries. Quite a few new listings, despite the market sentiment, eh?

Check out how the portfolios of the top 10-by-AUM funds in different categories stack up against each other.
